Your Guide to Time Away

Agnes Scott College provides a variety of leave options to support employees through planned time off and important life events. Whether you are taking sick leave, welcoming a new child through paid parental leave, or navigating a longer-term need through FMLA, our policies are designed to ensure employees have the time, flexibility, and support they need. This page outlines the available types of leave and the resources that will guide you through each process. For more detailed information, employees can refer to the Employee Handbook, available on Agnes Scott College's intranet, MyAgnes.

Vacation time supports employee well-being and work-life balance. Employees begin accruing vacation on the first day they become benefits-eligible. Vacation accrual is based on employment status and years of service. Employees who work fewer than 35 hours per week or fewer than 12 months per year accrue vacation on a prorated basis.

In accordance with the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA), the college provides eligible faculty and staff with up to 12 weeks of family and medical leave during any 12-month period. FMLA leave runs concurrently with other college-sponsored leave plans.

Agnes Scott College believes that parents who want to be able to care for newborn or newly adopted/placed children should be able to do so. Employees who have completed 12 months of service and have worked at least one semester or 1250 hours in the previous 12-month period are eligible for paid parental leave, normally not to exceed eight (8) weeks for full-time staff. Full-time faculty are eligible to take one semester of parental leave.

Agnes Scott College provides a comprehensive workers' compensation insurance program at no cost to employees. This program covers any injury or illness sustained in the course of employment that requires medical, surgical or hospital treatment. Subject to applicable legal requirements, workers' compensation insurance provides benefits after a short waiting period or if the employee is hospitalized, immediately.

The Sick-Leave Donation program is a voluntary, confidential program permitting staff members to donate sick time to a co-worker who cannot return to work because of a serious health condition, as defined under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). Voluntary sick-leave donations from other employees may be used to provide paid sick leave for a maximum of 160 hours in a twelve-month period.

Agnes Scott College encourages employees to fulfill their civic responsibilities by participating in elections. Generally, employees are able to find time to vote either before or after their regular work schedule. If employees are unable to vote in an election during their nonworking hours, Agnes Scott will grant up to two hours of unpaid time off to vote.
