Agnes Scott's American Chemical Society (ACS) Student Affiliates Organization offers engaging opportunities for students to become better acquainted with the chemical sciences. ACS members organize chemistry fairs and service activities with the goal of enhancing their college experience and educating their community. Past events such as make-your-own ice cream, lip balm, bath salts, coffee-filter chromatography flowers, and slime have helped promote an awareness of chemistry throughout the Agnes Scott Community. In addition, ACS members are committed to serving the broader community through service activities such as the Discover the Sciences event, annual food-drives, and Science Olympiad volunteer events. Award given to Agnes Scott's ACS chapter

The Agnes Scott student chapter of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has been selected to receive an Honorable Mention award for its activities conducted during the 2012-13 academic year. "Professor Leon Venable, faculty advisor of the chapter, deserves special commendation. Few faculty members are willing to make the great commitment of time and energy that a successful chapter requires. Professor Venable's efforts certainly represent the best in undergraduate science education and mentoring around the country."

Discover the Sciences:

In September 2012, ACS organized the first ever Discover the Science event at Agnes Scott! Professors from all of the science departments were available to meet with students to discuss courses and research. Pre-health advising, academic advising, GEMS, and the Science and Math Learning Centers were also represented. In addition, ACS provided ingredients and guidance for students to make your own ice cream using cream, sugar, ice, salt, and a little bit of chemistry! We had a great turnout and look forward to repeating the event in 2013! Thank you to all of those who volunteered to participate and the Chemistry Department for supporting the event!

Carolyn Young Mentor Walk- Coffee Filter Chromatography Event:

ACS is committed to serving local students through scientific exploration. In September 2012, our chapter participated in a campus-wide event, the Carolyn Young Mentor Walk, which was designed to encourage and inspire local children to finish school and attend college. ACS hosted a booth in the activities fair portion of the event, in which we help students discover chemistry through a coffee filter chromatography activity. Not only did the children enjoy making colorful crafts, but they also displayed enthusiasm for learning basic chemistry principles and vocabulary.

Trick-or-Treating Community Service Event:

ACS invited students from all disciplines on campus to help serve the community. On Halloween weekend, we dressed up and went trick-or-treating for canned goods for the Atlanta Community Food Bank. We collected over 200 pounds of food for the hungry. This is the fourth year that our chapter has done this event, and we plan to continue the tradition in the years to come!

National Chemistry Week at the Fernbank Science Center!

In celebration of National Chemistry Week (October 21-27,) ACS members volunteered at the Fernbank Science Center’s chemistry fair! We helped students make slime from Elmers glue and taught them proper chemistry safety. In addition, Dr. Venable gave his famous chemistry show and delighted all audience members, both young and old!
