Eco House

The Eco House is one of the three theme houses on the Agnes Scott campus that students can apply to live in. The house is a sustainability living and learning community that helps residents model sustainable practices such as:  waste diversion, energy & water conservation, and clean commuting. Eight students are selected to live in the house every spring based on review of applicants by the Dean of Students and Office of Sustainability staff. The residents represent students from a diverse array of majors, backgrounds, and level of experience with sustainability. With the help of Residence Life and our office, the residents work to plan events that showcase elements of an eco-friendly lifestyle.

Features of the house:

A green cone composter and compost bin

Two raised beds featuring rotating crops including:  bell peppers, green beans, kale, radishes, broccoli, cherry tomatoes, carrots, fennel, lavender, and basil

Compact fluorescent lighting (CFL) in all light fixtures

Low-flow shower heads and shower timers

Gray water buckets in showers for watering

Stay tuned for:  weatherization of the house with improved insulation and more energy efficient equipment

Past events:

Make your own cosmetics

Make your own laundry detergent

“Upcycling a t-shirt” and “Paper Flower Making” craft nights

Each year, our office works to make the Eco House more of a well-rounded example of sustainable living. In the summer of 2013, we instituted a comprehensive “Zero Waste Plan” for the house and wrote a guide for the residents to follow. The plan addresses how to eliminate as much misuse of water, energy, paper, and gas emissions as possible. For example, we have replaced all of the paper towel dispensers with hand towels to curb paper waste. By modeling a zero waste environment in the Eco House, we hope that this way of living can soon be a reality for all of Agnes Scott’s on-campus residence halls.
