Research Title: Unexpected Redox Behavior of a Copper Amino Acid Complex, Cu(Serine)2.  Biochemically Relevant Redox Hazard?
Research Mentor: Dr. T. Leon Venable

In words anyone can understand, what did you study in your summer research?
We looked at copper to see its role in diseases. This is important because it helps us understand how copper reacts and contributes to disease and may help us come up with possible treatments.

What skills did you gain from REU?
Being more analytic and working by myself because I didn’t have any experience working by myself until then. I gained a lot of skills [in] critical thinking also.

What was challenging about research? How do you handle those challenges (or how did you see people handle them well)?
One thing that I found really challenging was following the protocols that I didn’t have any experience [with]. It was challenging but my mentor helped me a lot.

I enjoy [Neuroscience] because... I love learning about how our brain is the control center of our body.

What I didn’t expect about research was... that it would be that short and we may not get to do everything we planned on doing.
