Teaching and Scholarly Interests

Calvert Johnson's areas of research include early keyboard music of England, Italy, Spain from the 16th-18th centuries;and women composers, especially of keyboard music in the 18th-20th centuries and France. He has performed throughout the US, Mexico, Europe and Japan, and is known for his multicultural programming including works by women, blacks, Asians and Hispanics. He is the author of critically acclaimed volumes on Spain, England and Italy in the series Historical Organ Techniques and Repertoire: An Historical Survey of Organ Performance Practices and Repertoire, as well as a new edition of Frescobaldi's Fiori musicali for Wayne Leupold Editions.

He has recorded for Albany Records (Soliloquies: New Japanese and Chinese Music for Harpsichord and Organ), Calcante Recordings and Raven Records (Frescobaldi: Fiori Musicali "Musical Flowers" for organ). He is also the chair of the Board of the ArtReach Foundation, the national Treasurer of the American Guild of Organists and former President of the Southeastern Historical Keyboard Society.
