Advising Notes

Helpful advising information for potential and current chemistry majors and minors:

Applications for on-campus summer science research projects are due to Molly Embree in the Science Center for Women in February each year.

Students considering a chemistry major, or considering medical school, should aim to take CHE150+L in their first year if at all possible.

Students enjoy moving from CHE150+L to CHE240+L, but the department has noticed that it is often more straightforward for a student if they move from CHE150+L to CHE220+L instead.

Students considering a chemistry major should aim to seek advice from a member of the chemistry department no later than spring of their sophomore year, preferably sooner if at all possible.

Students considering an A.C.S. chemistry major rather than the ordinary chemistry major should be aware that the following required courses are only offered every other year: CHE330, CHE335, CHE360, CHE365, CHE370, and CHE375.

CHE330 and CHE335 are typical offered in even falls (fall 2020, fall 2022....)
CHE360 and CHE365 are typically offered in even springs (spring 2020, spring 2022...)
CHE370 and CHE375 are typically offered in odd springs (spring 2021, spring 2023...)

Students who will graduate in an even spring (e.g. May 2020, 2022, 2024...), who are also considering an A.C.S. chemistry major, should therefore plan to take the following courses at the following times:

  • spring of sophomore year - CHE230 and CHE220+L if not taken already
  • fall of junior year - CHE330, CHE335, and CHE270
  • spring of junior year - MAT119, CHE370, and CHE375
  • fall of senior year - CHE260
  • spring of senior year - CHE360 and CHE365

Students who will graduate in an odd spring (e.g. May 2021, 2023, 2025...), who are also considering an A.C.S. chemistry major, should therefore plan to take the following courses at the following times:

  • spring of sophomore year - MAT119 and CHE220+L if not taken already
  • fall of junior year - CHE260
  • spring of junior year - CHE360 and CHE365 and CHE230
  • fall of senior year - CHE270, CHE330, and CHE335
  • spring of senior year - CHE370 and CHE375

Please note that the following chemistry courses are typically offered every semester: CHE150+L, CHE220+L, CHE240+L

Please note that the following chemistry courses are typically only offered in fall semesters: CHE260, CHE270, CHE300+L (formerly CHE280+L)

Please note that the following chemistry courses are typically only offered in spring semesters: CHE230, CHE301 (formerly CHE275), CHE340, CHE350, CHE385+L

Double-majors:

The chemistry department supports students who wish to double-major in chemistry and any other major on campus, with the exception of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (BMB) Major. Students cannot double-major in Chemistry-BMB.

Please note, for students who double-major in Chemistry and Biology. CHE150+L will be replaced (in the list of requirements for a chemistry major) with 4-credits of chemistry that have not already been counted toward either of the declared majors (these will likely be CHE3xx or CHE4xx credits).

Please also note that the Neuroscience Program prohibits students from declaring a double-major in neuroscience and another STEM major (such as a chemistry major).
