Legacy

Now more than ever, the world needs young leaders with skills to effect positive change. Legacy helps you realize, develop and hone your abilities to lead effectively.

Legacy, a signature program of SUMMIT, is an immersive leadership development experience for all incoming students. During the 2021 - 2022 academic year, Legacy has two sequential sections:

Section 1: August 2021

The first section begins in August, in conjunction with the Gay Johnson McDougall Center for Global Diversity and Inclusion, and focuses on inclusive leadership. In this section, you'll:

  • Gain tools to create a culture of inclusion and respect.
  • Learn how to recognize power and privilege.
  • Identify and respond to microaggressions and implicit bias.
  • Build competencies towards socially responsible allyship.

Legacy Leaders, a group of highly skilled and trained upperclass students, will help guide you through the experience, which includes group activities and reflective discussions. You'll meet with your Legacy group on August 20 and the program will continue through August 21.

Section 2: January 2022

In January, you will participate in a series of workshops co-hosted by the Office of Internships and Career Development that will build upon the content you learned in the first section of Legacy. These workshops will help you to further understand yourself as a leader and explore how your individual identities and experiences contribute to your leadership abilities. This time will also help you further clarify your personal and professional goals.

Legacy is a degree requirement for all students.

“As part of Legacy, I learned how to harness my strengths and use them for the greater good. Not being perfect in one area does not diminish my worth as a leader or person.”

Legacy is a leadership experience for new Agnes Scott students. Throughout the program, you'll develop a better understanding of yourself, your peers and the Agnes Scott community.
Isaac Newton once said that “If I have seen further than others, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.” The leadership of the founders, students, alumnae, faculty, staff and friends of the college has made Agnes Scott the institution that it is today. They have left their legacy, and while you are here, you'll be creating yours. This is the first step in figuring out what you want to do during your time at Agnes Scott.
Legacy serves as your introduction to the leadership components of the SUMMIT curriculum, just as orientation serves as your introduction to Agnes Scott in general. By experiencing Legacy so early, you'll have a chance to build deeper relationships with your peers before classes begin and receive foundational experiences for understanding what leadership means at Agnes Scott.
Legacy is a graduation requirement and must be completed in full as part of your Agnes Scott experience. If you have an extenuating circumstance that you believe prohibits your full participation, please contact your SUMMIT adviser.
Don’t expect to be bored! Legacy is an active, engaging program where you will be working hard and having fun at the same time. This year Legacy will be held through online modules and online discussions with a small group. Expect to have lots of engaging conversations throughout your experience.
