Teaching and Scholarly Interests

Amy King Black is active as a free-lance musician in the Atlanta area and has performed with groups such as the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Greenville Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Lyric Theatre, Carroll Symphony Orchestra, and Atlanta Ballet Orchestra. She has also performed for numerous conferences and festivals, including Piccolo Spoleto in Charleston, South Carolina, College Band Directors National Association Conference, and Georgia American Choral Directors Association Summer Workshop.

In addition to her work at Agnes Scott College, Mrs. Black teaches music appreciation, music theory, and music history courses at Clayton State University. She maintains a studio of twenty private horn students and frequently conducts clinics and master classes for high school and middle school students throughout the region.

Her scholarly interest include historical musicology, brass pedagogy, and orchestral and chamber music literature. 

Mrs. Black's primary teachers have included Kevin Kozak, Brice Andrus, Jean Martin-Williams, and Fred Mills (Brass Quintet).

Professional Activities

Amy Black has performed in most of the major concert venues in the Atlanta metropolitan area, including Symphony Hall, Chastain Park, and the Fox Theatre. In addition, performance tours (choral and orchestral) have included trips to Germany, Italy, and Norway, as well as many US cities.

Selected performance experience includes performances with Augusta Opera, Carroll Symphony Orchestra, Greenville Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the Ray Charles Orchestra, and the Atlanta Lyric Theatre.

She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and Pi Kappa Lambda Music Honor Society.
