Application Timeline

If graduate school is your first priority, talk to a Career Coach about a backup plan/job search in case you change your priority mid-process. Consider this recommended schedule of steps … timelines vary by discipline so check with your faculty advisor, pre-health advisor and other mentors to finalize your personal timeline:

>90 days before application deadlines:

  • Identify areas of potential study (access McCain Lib Guide: Exploring Graduate Schools)
  • Finalize CV/resume with CWS and a Career Coach
  • Attend graduate school fairs/info sessions
  • Conduct info interviews with alumnae who attended programs of interest
  • Take prep course or use online prep resources for required tests such as GRE/LSAT

60-90 days before deadlines:

  • Meet with CWS tutor to outline and begin draft of personal statement (most take several editing cycles).
  • Identify potential faculty references (ask for their help/requirements), and review list of programs with advisors.
  • Write first draft of personal statement.
  • Use Compass to schedule time with Career Coach to review draft of personal statement.

45 days out:

  • Finalize personal statement
  • Provide proofed/final materials to faculty recommenders
  • Finalize application materials

Last, but not least, contact Irene Foran to ring the bell when you receive your graduate school acceptances.
