Teaching and Scholarly Interests

Professor Paul is a scholar of Chinese linguistics and psycholinguistics whose research explores how language and gesture work together to convey meaning. Her work examines how meaning is expressed across languages, with particular attention to motion events, cross-linguistic patterns, and the relationship between language and gesture. She studies how speakers coordinate verbal and nonverbal systems to communicate meaning and whether gestures reflect language-specific patterns across structurally different languages. She is also interested in how gesture supports the understanding of abstract concepts such as time and motion. Her research has been published in journals including Language Learning, Cognitive Science, Lingua, and Journal of Child Language.

In addition to her research, Professor Paul performs on traditional Chinese instruments, including the guzheng and pipa, and shares Chinese music to foster cross-cultural understanding.
