Concurrent with developing the new Physician Assistant curriculum, Agnes Scott is developing the program’s new home.
The Physician Assistant program will be exclusively located in Hopkins Hall, which is currently being renovated to meet program needs. The $10 million renovation will outfit Hopkins with innovative technology and instructional facilities for the practice of medicine, including Anatomage digital anatomy tables, a clinical examination suite, an instructional laboratory, and state-of-the-art classrooms. Students enrolled in the program will also benefit from a third-floor student lounge and study spaces.
Agnes Scott has received $1 million in federal appropriations for the project–announced by Senator John Ossoff at a press conference on campus – an investment in addressing critical healthcare gaps for maternal health in Georgia. “We are immensely grateful to Senators Ossoff and Warnock for their support of our work to educate healthcare professionals, especially those who can make a difference in the lives of women and children,” said Leocadia I. Zak, president of Agnes Scott College. The renovation and program launch have attracted an additional $610,000 in support to date from forward-thinking alumnae and foundations who see its immense value in our community. The successful renovation of Hopkins Hall by early 2025 is crucial to receiving provisional accreditation from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, allowing the college to enroll its first students in October 2025.
The Kaiser Family Foundation has identified Georgia as a Primary Care Health Professional Shortage Area, noting that the state has met only 40% of its healthcare needs. “By building this master’s program,” said Kelly H. Ball, associate vice president and dean for graduate studies, “Agnes Scott is committed to transforming healthcare and addressing the most urgent healthcare needs in Georgia.”
