Teaching and Scholarly Interests

Elise Eskew Sparks is an Atlanta-based choral director and mezzo-soprano. She has served as the Director of Choral Activities at Agnes Scott College since 2008. Under her leadership, the Collegiate Chorale performed at the GMEA In-Service Conference in Savannah in 2011 and at Spivey Hall during the fall of 2014. In the spring of 2015, Elise’s chorus from Decatur High School performed in St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, Ireland. She has taught high school choral music for over ten years and has served as a church musician for over 15 years.

Elise holds a Ph.D. in Music Education from Georgia State University and a Masters of Sacred Music from Emory University. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Elise performed as the soprano soloist in Beethoven’s Mass in C, Madame Goldentrill in Mozart’s The Impresario, and Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasilerias with the UNC-CH Symphony Orchestra. While in Atlanta, Elise has performed as a soloist with the Emory University Concert Choir, University Chorus, and the New Trinity Baroque. Elise has sung with the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus for nine seasons, performing solos in cantatas and Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (both in Eugene and at Carnegie Hall) under the baton of Helmut Rilling. Elise has also sung under Baroque specialists Ton Koopman and Matthew Halls. She is a past member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and Chamber Chorus.

An advocate of qualitative research methodology, her areas of research are repertoire quality and the process by which composers craft works which embody both musical worth and pedagogical value.

She and husband Steve are parents to 7-year-old twins, Meredith and Fisher.

Professional Activities

Elise serves as the ACDA R&S Chair of Women’s Choirs in the state of Georgia and sings with Atlanta’s Coro Vocati.
