Testing After COVID-19 Vaccination

Some members of our community have inquired about whether individuals should continue getting tested for COVID-19 after vaccination. Recently, the CDC offered guidance for people who are considered fully vaccinated (fully protected two weeks after the second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines; or two weeks after the single-dose Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine).

While the vaccines prevent serious illness from COVID-19, scientists are still trying to determine how well the vaccines prevent spread of the virus to others. Therefore, individuals who have been fully vaccinated are still required to adhere to health and safety protocols, like mask-wearing, hand washing, and physically distancing by staying at least six feet apart from others. Once fully vaccinated (two weeks after receiving both doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine), individuals do not have to continue getting tested, BUT public health experts still recommend testing for anyone  who exhibits symptoms associated with the COVID-19 infection — cough, fever, congestion, fatigue, headache, loss of sense of smell, etc. - regardless of vaccination status. The same is also true for those who suspect that they’ve been exposed to someone or have themselves been previously diagnosed with COVID-19. Individuals who have not been fully vaccinated as defined by the CDC Vaccination Guidance, are still required to participate in the bi-weekly, on-campus testing. Please submit proof of full vaccination (two weeks after receiving the second dose of either the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine; or two weeks after the single dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine) using the COVID-19 Testing Attestation form. Please check the appropriate box when completing the form. If you have only received one dose of either the Pfizer or the Moderna, you are not considered fully vaccinated and protected. All individuals working on campus are still required to complete the daily symptom tracker in Medicat, whether or not they have been vaccinated.

As a reminder, if you have traveled, we are asking that you follow CDC After You Travel guidelines, which include taking a viral test 3-5 days after travel, and self-quarantining for 7 days, before returning to campus. The initial test after travel should be taken off-campus (PCR test ONLY is permissible), and your results uploaded using the COVID-19 Testing Attestation form. Following this initial test, you must continue to participate in bi-weekly on-campus testing, until you have been fully vaccinated.

Thank you in advance for your diligence in adhering to our COVID-19 protocols. We will continue to update the community, as more information becomes available from the public health experts.
