Teaching and Scholarly Interests

Dr. Kristi Lee has been a counselor educator for 16 years and is dedicated to preparing counselors who are skilled, ethical, and prepared to provide counseling services from a multicultural and social justice perspective. Her teaching approach has integrated community-based learning, providing students with hands-on opportunities to engage with real-world mental health issues through collaborations with local and international organizations.

These experiences help students bridge the gap between theory and practice, while promoting social justice and advocacy in the counseling field.

Dr. Lee’s research focuses on gender-based violence, social justice, and women’s mental health. She conducts interdisciplinary, intercultural research in collaboration with faculty at Universidad Rafael Landívar, a Jesuit university in Guatemala, where her work addresses the intersections of gender, violence against women, and indigenous healing practices. Dr. Lee has involved student researchers on projects related to hate crimes, marginalized communities, and other pressing social issues, furthering her commitment to community engagement and advocacy through scholarship.

Dr. Lee earned her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from the College of William & Mary, where her dissertation focused on preparing counseling students with social justice advocacy skills through community-based learning. She holds a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Idaho State University, where she worked with incarcerated individuals and clients navigating the justice system. Dr. Lee is a licensed mental health counselor and has also provided support to survivors of domestic violence and their children, having worked at a shelter during her early career.

Dr. Lee’s scholarship and clinical work are grounded in her commitment to community-based teaching, learning, and advocacy. She continues to foster a learning environment where students engage with real-world challenges, preparing them to serve diverse populations with compassion, cultural humility, and social justice awareness.

Professional Activities

Dr. Lee is a licensed mental health counselor. In her clinical work, Dr. Lee has gained extensive experience in diverse settings, including a county jail, a women’s work release prison program, university counseling centers, and MEND Seattle, a low-cost, feminist, and social justice-oriented counseling organization. Her clinical practice uses trauma-informed and liberatory approaches in working with individuals experiencing significant life challenges. Dr. Lee now operates a virtual private practice, where she provides counseling services to clients across Washington State. Her work continues to be deeply rooted in social justice principles, and she brings this perspective into her teaching, encouraging students to develop both their clinical skills and ethical foundations as future counselors.
