Wednesday, January 20, 2010
Tickets are now on sale for the February 23 concert by solo pianist George Winston. The concert will launch a new music series called “Eddie & Agnes” at Agnes Scott College.
Tickets for the 8 p.m. concert in Presser Hall are now available through Ticket Alternative at (877) 725-8849 and at ticketalternative.com.
“After 20 years of flirting with each other,” said Daren Wang, “Eddie and Agnes are getting hitched and Verb is officiating.”
Wang, the executive director of the Decatur Book Festival and curator of Verb.org, which is co-promoter of the events, collaborated with Agnes Scott President Elizabeth Kiss to establish this unique relationship between a well-respected entertainment venue and a highly regarded college. Eddie Owen is general manager of the renowned music venue, Eddie’s Attic. Agnes Scott is a 900-student liberal arts college for women just two blocks south of the Decatur Square.
“These two are made for each other. Agnes, with her stately 817-seat Presser Hall, flawless sightlines, gorgeous windows, comfy seats and great acoustics. Eddie, with his expertise, experience, charm, and Rolodex. Like Sam and Diane, Ross and Rachel, you can only wonder how it took so long,” Wang said.
“We are thrilled to welcome George Winston and the Atlanta community to the Agnes Scott campus for this inaugural Eddie & Agnes Concert,” said Rosemary Lévy Zumwalt, Agnes Scott’s vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college. “Events such as this one complement the academic environment as well as provide an opportunity for the college and community to enjoy a wonderful evening together.”
With a career spanning four decades, Winston’s melodic, spare, and understated styles are a cross between traditional American folk and instrumental pop/R&B that he calls Rural Folk Piano, stride jazz and New Orleans R&B piano. He is touring behind his new album, “Love Will Come — The Music of Vince Guaraldi, Vol. 2.”
Tickets in the preferred seating area (the 400 seats closest to the stage) are $35 in advance; tickets in the rear floor and balcony are $25 in advance. Doors open at 7 p.m.
As with most Winston concerts, the artist has requested that audience members bring canned food that will be donated to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Collection baskets will be at the entrances.
Please note that the performance will not be amplified, as requested by the artist.
