Pepperdene Fund Gaining Momentum

Friday, April 1, 2016

Agnes Scott has raised more than $205,000 from alumnae and friends to create an endowment that will perpetuate her passionate instruction.

Margaret W. During her more than 30 years at Agnes Scott College, the late Professor Emerita of English Margaret W. "Jane" Pepperdene formed close friendships and associations with 20th-century literary guests--and with innumerable students. The fruits of these literary contacts, as well as her academic research and rigorous intellect, were bestowed lavishly on these students.

To honor Professor Pepperdene's legacy, Agnes Scott has raised more than $205,000 from alumnae and friends to create an endowment that will perpetuate her passionate instruction. Once $1.5 million is raised, a permanently endowed professorship will be created to honor Professor Pepperdene.

Initial gifts totaling more than $200,000 to the Margaret W. Pepperdene Fund for Intellectual Engagement have supported the acquisition of books and analytical materials to deepen students' experience and understanding of literature, along with additional initiatives that help students explore their love of English.

At $750,000, the fund will endow the Margaret W. Pepperdene Writer in Residence Program to continue bringing accomplished writers to campus.

When gifts reach the $1.5 million level, the fund becomes the Margaret W. Pepperdene Professorship in English to recruit and retain a teacher-scholar in English.

Alumnae and friends are invited to continue this legacy. To discuss your contribution to the Margaret W. Pepperdene Fund for Intellectual Engagement, contact Betsy Huey, director of principal gifts, at 404.471.5345 or bhuey@agnesscott.edu.
