Agnes Scott College Launches Its New Signature SUMMIT Course: Sophomore Class Atlanta Leadership Experience (SCALE)

Decatur, GA, November 14, 2019—Agnes Scott College is pleased to announce the launch of our new signature SUMMIT course, the Sophomore Class Atlanta Leadership Experience (SCALE). SCALE will launch in the spring semester. For 2020 and 2021, all sophomores, juniors and seniors may opt into the course. The course will be required for all sophomores starting in 2022.

“Students who complete SCALE will have a better understanding of how the liberal arts prepare them for meaningful work, and how concepts and skills learned in their first-year seminar, Leadership Prologue, may be applied in real organizational settings,” said Dr. Hal Thorsrud, Professor of Philosophy and Faculty Coordinator for Leadership Development. “This experience will also give them an opportunity to reflect on the missions, successes, and challenges faced by their SCALE organization, and how those might align with their own strengths and interests.”

Dr. Elaine Meyer-Lee, Associate Vice President for Global Learning and Leadership Development added, “SCALE parallels our very successful first-year SUMMIT core course Journeys, in which all of our students travel on global immersion experiences with their faculty during Peak Week in March to see the concepts they have studied in action. In the same way, our sophomore students will now have the opportunity to spend that week in teams, working within the great wealth of corporations or non-profit organizations in Atlanta to gain hands-on leadership development experience and explore potential careers. Juniors and seniors enrolled in the course alongside sophomores will also have the option of applying to serve as a SCALE Leader to help facilitate the program at its various locations.

Designed in response to student input, this 1-credit interdisciplinary course will be taught by faculty from multiple disciplines and supported by staff from Agnes Scott’s Gué Pardue Hudson Center for Leadership and Service and the Office of Internship and Career Development. Through both academic and field learning, students will gain experience and shadow leaders in businesses and non-profit organizations in and around Atlanta to deepen their knowledge, build career literacy and equip themselves for post-graduate success.

Each phone call illuminated new ways to engage our Scotties, and our community partners expressed such enthusiasm in working with our dynamic students. Projects range anywhere from shadowing and observing to supporting fundraising efforts, event coordination, writing reviews of world premieres of shows, social media outreach and promotion, working with refugee communities, learning about the business of sports, and much more. We are confident that each experience will be enriching, helping our Scotties develop valuable leadership skills that will aid them in their post-graduate success.”
