2019 Institute for International Education Open Doors Report Ranks Agnes Scott College No. 2 Among All Baccalaureate Colleges for Undergraduate Participation in Study Abroad

Decatur, GA, November 26, 2019—The Institute for International Education (IIE) has released its 2019 Open Doors Report. IIE describes this report as “a comprehensive resource on international students and scholars studying or teaching at higher education institutions in the United States and U.S. students studying abroad for academic credit at their home colleges or universities.” Agnes Scott College was ranked #2 among all Baccalaureate colleges for its undergraduate participation in study abroad in the IIE report (scroll within the report to see the complete list).

Additionally, in a new category for reputational rankings this year, U.S. News & World Report invited college presidents, chief academic officers, deans of students and deans of admissions from more than 1,500 schools to nominate institutions with stellar examples of study abroad programs. Agnes Scott placed in the top 10 nominated colleges among all colleges and universities in the country. Agnes Scott was also ranked No. 1 in the country among national liberal arts colleges on the Most Innovative Schools list in U.S. News & World Report’s 2020 edition of Best Colleges.

The leadership at Agnes Scott attributes this recognition to SUMMIT, the college’s signature experience that prepares every student to be an effective leader in a global society. As part of SUMMIT, each first-year student has a two-day leadership immersion experience in the fall (Legacy) and travels abroad for a course of study (Journeys) in the spring semester. Agnes Scott students are encouraged to continue traveling abroad throughout their sophomore, junior and senior years.

“Given all of the creative and committed work of our faculty and Center for Global Learning staff, it is wonderful to be recognized again for the quality of global learning we are providing to every student through SUMMIT,” said Agnes Scott College President Leocadia I. Zak. “Through semester-long exchanges with universities around the world, summer language or faculty-led programs, and our innovative Journeys course, a record number of our students are taking advantage of substantial hands-on learning abroad. This global exposure gives our students intercultural empathy and competencies that are very valuable to employers – and to the world. We are honored by IIE’s recognition.”
