Agnes Scott College Announces Its 2019 Hubert Scholars, Goldwater Scholarship Award Recipients and Phi Beta Kappa Class

 

Decatur, GA, May 24, 2019— Agnes Scott College announces its 2019 Hubert Scholars, 2019 Goldwater Scholarship award recipients and 2019 Phi Beta Kappa class.

Hubert Scholars

Established by the Hubert Charitable Trust, the Hubert Scholars program is designed to encourage careers in public service and provides funding for summer internships of 200 plus hours serving the needs of others—for food, medical attention, education or spiritual support. Students supplement their internships by working with a faculty member to receive academic credit.

After an extensive application and interview process, the following students have been recognized as 2019 Hubert Scholars:

  • Ngun Kip Lily Steven Chin ’21 will be living and working in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia at the Chin Student Organization teaching refugee children.
  • Alex Fallon ’20 will be living and serving in San Francisco, California as a teaching fellow with Breakthrough San Francisco teaching and advising fifth to eighth graders.
  • Georgia Hill ’20 will be serving in Atlanta, Georgia with International Rescue Committee working with newly arrived refugees and teaching adult education.
  • Tiyamika Williams ’22 will be serving in Chicago, Illinois with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), working with the community (specifically with Chicago high school students) to raise awareness and help reduce the stigmas surrounding mental health.
  • Devyn Wittmeyer ’20 will be serving in Atlanta, Georgia with Our House, working with pre-school aged children of Atlanta families experiencing homelessness.
  • Christina Matu ’21 will be living and serving in Thailand and Myanmar with Earth Mission Asia working as a teacher’s aide and tutor for students learning English.
  • Arin Yost ’22 will be living and serving in Cypress, Texas at Abba’s House, working with refugee women and children as they progress through the resettlement process. 

Goldwater Scholarship Award

The Goldwater Scholarship Award is the most prestigious scholarship for undergraduate students planning to pursue a career in the STEM fields. From an estimated pool of over 5,000 college sophomores and juniors, 1,223 natural science, engineering and mathematics students were nominated by 443 academic institutions to compete for the 2019 Goldwater scholarships. Of students who reported, 241 of the Scholars are men, 252 are women, and virtually all intend to obtain a Ph.D. as their highest degree objective. Sixty-two Scholars are mathematics and computer science majors, 360 are majoring in the natural sciences, and 74 are majoring in engineering. Many of the Scholars have published their research in leading journals and have presented their work at professional society conferences.
