Decatur, GA, August 28, 2018—Agnes Scott College has earned a STARS GOLD rating in recognition of its sustainability achievements from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). STARS, the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System measures and encourages sustainability in all aspects of higher education.

Agnes Scott’s report is publicly available on the STARS website:

The Agnes Scott campus community has committed to environmental stewardship and leadership for several years. The Agnes Scott college staff developed the Climate Action Plan in 2009 to move the college’s sustainability goals forward. This plan included cutting greenhouse gas emissions, planning renovation and construction projects to meet LEED standards, reducing commuting and travel impacts, embedding sustainability in the college, making the campus a living laboratory for sustainability research and collaborating with organizations like Southface Energy Institute.

"One of the most rewarding results of the STARS process for the Center for Sustainability was realizing how the work of sustainability at Agnes Scott is truly integrated into all aspects of life and work at the college. The majority of the students, staff and faculty here have participated in some aspect of the programs that we have documented through STARS. This clearly means it takes the entire college community to accomplish a STARS Gold rating," said Agnes Scott’s executive director for the center of sustainability, Susan Kidd.

With more than 800 participants in 30 countries, AASHE’s STARS program is the most widely recognized framework in the world for publicly reporting comprehensive information related to a college or university’s sustainability performance. Participants report achievements in five overall areas: 1) academics 2) engagement, 3) operations, 4) planning and administration, and 5) innovation and leadership.

STARS was developed by the campus sustainability community to provide high standards for recognizing campus sustainability efforts,” said AASHE Executive Director Meghan Fay Zahniser. “Agnes Scott has demonstrated a substantial commitment to sustainability by achieving a STARS Gold Rating and is to be congratulated for their efforts.”

Unlike other rating or ranking systems, this program is open to all institutions of higher education. The criteria that determine a STARS rating are transparent and accessible to anyone. Because STARS is a program based on credits earned, it allows for internal comparisons and comparisons with similar institutions.

“We are very proud to have achieved a STARS rating for our sustainability accomplishments. We look forward to watching our sustainability efforts grow and improve through the STARS program,” said Agnes Scott college president, Leocadia I. Zak.
