Message from President Kiss regarding Sweet Briar College

Monday, June 22, 2015

Yesterday we learned that Sweet Briar College will remain open for the 2015-2016 academic year as the result of a mediated agreement between its board of trustees and several groups who have been pursuing legal action to prevent the college’s closure

We are in the process of contacting all Sweet Briar students who have enrolled as transfers at Agnes Scott and are offering to refund their deposit if they choose to stay at Sweet Briar. We remain committed to providing a warm Scottie welcome to all admitted transfer students from Sweet Briar who wish to join the Agnes Scott community.

Women’s colleges continue to play a distinctive role in educating leaders and lifelong learners. Our graduates report significantly higher self-confidence, are more prepared for their first job, and are nearly twice as likely as their female counterparts at public institutions to earn a graduate degree. They are also disproportionately represented in leadership roles in business, government, and other sectors.

We recognize that in today’s environment, all colleges must adapt and innovate in order to thrive.  Here at Agnes Scott, we are launching SUMMIT, a unique curriculum that provides all students with a focus on global learning and leadership development, supported by a personal Board of Advisors. We are excited to be welcoming the largest first-year class in the college’s 126-year history this fall.

Sweet Briar also has a long and proud history, and the past few months have been extraordinarily difficult and painful for everyone involved.  On behalf of all of us at Agnes Scott, I extend best wishes to the college’s new leadership as they navigate the challenges ahead and seek to secure a strong and sustainable future for Sweet Briar.

Agnes Scott College educates women to think deeply, live honorably and engage the intellectual and social challenges of their times. Students are drawn to Agnes Scott by its excellent academic reputation, exceptional faculty and metropolitan Atlanta location—offering myriad social, cultural and experiential learning opportunities. This highly selective liberal arts college is known for its diverse and dynamic intellectual community. Through SUMMIT, it provides every student, regardless of major, with an individualized course of study and co-curricular experiences that develop leadership abilities and understanding of complex global dynamics.
