Agnes Scott College Rises in U.S. News & World Report Rankings

Tuesday, September 9, 2014

Agnes Scott College ranks No. 73 among national liberal arts colleges in U.S. News & World Report’s 2015 edition of “Best Colleges,” up from No. 89 last year, making it the top-ranked college in Georgia this year. It also ranks No. 21 in the “best value” ranking, up from No. 25 last year.

The college also was recognized for its diversity, making the list of top schools for students interested in studying with people of different backgrounds.

Among the favorable factors that influenced the college’s ranking are its high alumnae giving rate of 41 percent, strong student academic quality, with 40 percent of first-year students in the top 10 percent of their high school class, and low faculty-student ratio, with 71 percent of classes having fewer than 20 students.

“Rankings are just one, and in many ways a partial and imperfect, measure of educational quality,” says Elizabeth Kiss, president of Agnes Scott. “But we are pleased that Agnes Scott is consistently recognized by different college ranking agencies for offering both outstanding academics and value. We continue to broaden and enrich our academic offerings, and next year we will launch a unique new initiative, Summit, that will provide every student with an individualized four-year program of global learning and leadership development, guided by a personal board of advisers. Summit builds on our longstanding commitment to a liberal arts education but reinvents it for the 21st century by preparing every student to be an effective change agent and leader in a global society.”

U.S. News’s “Best Colleges” compares more than 1,400 accredited four-year schools. Key factors weighed in determining the rankings are: graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources, alumni giving and ratings by administrators at peer colleges and high school counselors.

Agnes Scott College educates women to think deeply, live honorably and engage the intellectual and social challenges of their times. Students are drawn to Agnes Scott by its excellent academic reputation, exceptional faculty and metropolitan Atlanta location—offering myriad social, cultural and experiential learning opportunities. This highly selective liberal arts college is known for its diverse and dynamic intellectual community. Through SUMMIT, it provides every student, regardless of major, with an individualized course of study and co-curricular experiences that develop leadership abilities and understanding of complex global dynamics.
