Lesley Sibner

August 13, 1934 - September 11, 2013

Received her Ph.D. in 1964 from the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences with a thesis about "Some Boundary Problems for Equations of Abruptly Changing Type" [Abstract] under the direction of Lipman Bers and Cathleen Morawetz. She taught at Stanford University for two years before spending a year at the Institut Henri Poincaré as a Fulbright Scholar. She spent most of her career as Professor of Mathematics at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University. Worked in the area of partial differential equations and global analysis. Her first career was in acting, but she discovered her enthusiasm for mathematics after taking a required calculus course designed for liberal arts majors. In 2012 she was elected as an initial member of the Fellows of the American Mathematical Society.
