Krystyna Kuperberg

July 17, 1944 -

Krystyna Kuperberg was born in Tarnow, Poland. She obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of Warsaw. After additional graduate work at the University of Warsaw, she lived briefly in Sweden with her family, then moved to the United States in 1972. She received her Ph.D. from Rice University in 1974 with a dissertation on "The Shape Theory Analogues of Some Classical Isomorphism Theorems for Homology and Homotopy Groups" (Full Version). She is currently the Alumni Professor of Mathematics at Auburn University. She found a smooth counterexample to the 1950 Seifert conjecture that every nonzero vector field on the 3-sphere has at least one closed orbit ("A smooth counterexample to the Seifert conjecture," Annals of Mathematics, Vol. 140, No. 3 (1994), 723-732 [JSTOR]). The construction was quickly recognized to also work in the real analytic and PL setting. Kuperberg has given major invited addresses for the American Mathematical Society (1995), the Mathematical Association of America (1996), and the International Congress of Mathematicians (!998).
