Break-In-Service

There are some instances when employees leave Agnes Scott College and then later return to work. In order for employees to resume accrual of benefits and retain their level of seniority, we have implemented the Break-In-Service policy:

Employees that terminate employment in good standing and return to Agnes Scott College are subject to the following rules:

Break-in-Service Greater than 12 Months: If an employee is rehired after a break in service greater than 12 months, she/he will be treated as a new hire for placement, compensation and benefits purposes (other than for eligibility for Family and Medical Leave in accordance with applicable law).

Break-in-Service Less than 12 Months: If an employee is rehired after a break in service of 12 months or less and is rehired in the same title held prior to the break in service:

the employee will be placed at the job grade held prior to the break in service.

the employees vacation accrual rate will be reinstated to the rate held prior to the break in service and the employees unused sick leave hours prior to the break will be reinstated.

the employees insurance benefits will be reinstated in accordance with the regulations of the provider.

all other benefits will be reinstated to the level they were at prior to the break in service.

If an employee is rehired after a break in service of 12 months or less and is rehired in a different position from that previously held, the employee will have a new job grade determined by the position into which the employee is hired. All benefits will be reinstated to the level they were at prior to the break-in service; however, the employee will be treated as a new hire for placement and compensation purposes.
