Alternative Service Experience

ASR LogoAlternative Service Experience (ASE) is a program that takes teams of students to a service site and promotes community building and engagement beyond our local Decatur community. ASE is a fun and meaningful way for students to spend their breaks and long weekends. In addition to working on a service project, each team takes part in education, social justice and teambuilding training sessions prior to departure.

Agnes Scott College is a proud member of Break Away, a national nonprofit organization that promotes the development of quality alternative break programs through training, assisting, and connecting campuses and communities.

Fall Break ASE 2016 will be a focus on sustainable living through appropriate technology with the Long Branch Environmental Education Center in Leicester, NC, about 18 miles outside of Asheville, NC. Students will be engaged in volunteer projects that may include edible landscaping, sustainable building, organic farming, and ecological restoration. We will have two and a half days of service (Thursday - Saturday morning) and a free afternoon and evening in Asheville (Saturday afternoon and evening). There are 3 mandatory pre-departure sessions. These sessions are from 6-8pm on September 19, September 26, and October 3.

In addition to the participant fee, students are expected to cover traveling meals (dinner Wednesday and lunch Sunday) as well as dinner Saturday night on their own. In addition, students will be responsible for covering the cost of any personal purchases, including snacks, souvenirs, and optional free time activities on their own.
