Next Steps

Inclusion begins with "I”.

On January 22, 2021, the Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion plan was presented to the community. Everyone at the college was encouraged to commit to 21 action steps to support the plan.

Take these steps:

  • Read a book from the Shuronda Gardner Smith Multicultural Resource Collection
  • Listen to many Black & Brown voices before jumping to save them
  • Read articles or listen to study the importance of intersectionality
  • Attend in-depth training on justice, equity, diversity and inclusion issues
  • Attend more than three events during Black History Month and each other’s heritage months
  • 21 for 21: attend at least 21 JEDI events in 2021
  • Understand the work of a public safety officer
  • Understand the work of front-line workers
  • Understand how college leadership is working to support JEDI values
  • Attend a Gay Johnson McDougall Center for Global Diversity and Inclusion roundtable
  • Engage with someone respectfully and courageously across differences
  • Collaborate with a community partner or theGay Johnson McDougall Center on a JEDI event
  • Embed JEDI values into your work, play and hobbies
  • Be an ambassador for DEI by raising funds to advance the work of the Gay Johnson McDougall Center
  • Give up something so others can access more equity
  • Put a Black Lives Matter sign in your yard
  • Support the TRHT, racial harmony, or JEDI efforts in all your social media
  • Embed JEDI statement in your organization/department’s bylaws, plans, SOPs, charters, etc.
  • When was the last time you shopped at or contracted with a woman- or minority-owned business?
  • Assess your curricula, social media, and networks for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color voices
  • Examine whether I am building up rather than tear down JEDI progress
These action steps challenge us to take responsibility for our behaviors, which advance deeper understandings of the intersections of race, power, privilege, supremacy and oppression. We hope you will join us and take on these action steps as we continue to build a more inclusive and just community.
