Pandiagonal magic squares from mixed auxiliary squares

Abstract

A method of constructing all pandiagonal magic squares has been much sought after for at least a century. Recently, in these pages, a novel method has been proposed by J. Bellew; this method is here given a sound backing. It is shown to be unable to generate as many pandiagonal magic squares as the method of primitive squares can, let alone all pandiagonal squares. However, it can construct some pandiagonal squares that cannot be constructed by previous methods.
