Agnes Scott, Eddie’s Attic Partner for New Concert Series

Wednesday, December 16, 2009

ATLANTA — Agnes Scott College and Eddie’s Attic, a popular live music venue in Decatur, are partnering to create a new concert series, called Eddie & Agnes.

Presser Hall at Agnes ScottThe series will attract talented performers to Decatur and Atlanta who may draw a larger crowd than Eddie’s Attic can comfortably accommodate. Events will be held in Agnes Scott’s Presser Hall, which seats approximately 800, compared to Eddie’s 150 seats.

“This partnership is a great way for Agnes Scott to continue its vibrant cultural events tradition. It also provides the college with the opportunity to serve as a resource for the Decatur community,” said Michelle Hall, associate vice president for student life and community relations at Agnes Scott. “It’s exciting for the students, and it should provide lots of opportunities for them.”

The series will include roughly one concert per month, or twelve per year. The first performance in the series will likely be in February and should be announced later this month.

“We’re looking for acts that would appeal to the Eddie’s, Agnes Scott and Decatur communities,” said Daren Wang, director of Eddie & Agnes and the Decatur Book Festival “I expect the range of musicians to be wide and strong, well-written songs at the heart of everything.”

Eddie Owen, founder and general manager of Eddie’s Attic, also stressed that finding performers to match the tastes of the Decatur and also the metro-Atlanta community would be a key goal of the series. He said he’d been searching for a way to collaborate with Agnes Scott.

“This has been bubbling in my belly for about 15 years,” said Owen. “I love Decatur; and [Presser Hall] is a beautiful old theater that tons of artists would be tickled pink to have a show in.”

Owen’s wife, Allena Bowen Owen, is a member of Agnes Scott’s class of 1990 and a former employee of the college, and her mother, Lylla Crum, and grandmother, Elizabeth Wallace, also graduated from Agnes Scott.

The Eddie & Agnes connection also extends to one of Eddie’s Attics’ most well-known success stories. Jennifer Nettles, member of the popular country music duo Sugarland, is a 1997 Agnes Scott grad and got her start at Eddie’s Attic.
