Borrowing Privileges for Visitors & Alumnae

All guests are welcome to browse and read items in the McCain Library collection during their visit to the library.  To check out books from McCain Library, however, one of the accounts listed below is required:

  • Alumnae Account:  An alumna may set up an account to borrow up to 5 books at a time from McCain Library.  This account costs $50 per year.  The first time you ask to borrow books from the library as a graduate of Agnes Scott College, you will complete a brief registration form and present a photo ID. We'll verify your alumnae status, check for any outstanding fines or billed items, accept payment of the borrower’s fee to borrow books ($50 debit/credit card, cash or check payable to Agnes Scott College), and issue you a Guest Borrower’s Card with a barcode. We will also enter you into our patron database and update your contact details.
  • Faculty/Staff Spouse Accounts: Accounts for the spouse of faculty and staff are available.
  • Visitor ARCHE Card: Visitors affiliated with an ARCHE institution may obtain an ARCHE Interlibrary Use Card from their home institution that will allow them to check out books from Agnes Scott College.

Please note that none of the above accounts provide remote access to databases or a personal login to McCain Library computers. Also, the borrowing of media, such as CDs, DVDs, and electronic equipment is not permitted due to high demand from current students, faculty and staff.

Frequently Asked Questions about Borrowing Privileges

Why are alumnae charged a fee?
While McCain Library would prefer not to charge alumnae for borrowing books, we have experienced a significant loss of library materials not returned by alumnae at a time when budgets do not adequately support replacement. Therefore, following the lead of other libraries that offer value-added privileges for a fee and after consulting with Alumnae Relations, in 2011 we instituted an annual fee of $50.00 (payable by cash, check made to Agnes Scott College, or credit/debit card) for Atlanta area alumnae who would like book borrowing privileges at McCain Library. ASC alumnae may read or make notes from books inside the library, but checking them out will require the fee to be paid. The annual fee will allow a graduate of Agnes Scott College to borrow up to five books at one time.

How long may books be checked out?
Regular circulating books and Browsing (bestseller) books may be checked out for three weeks. They may be renewed if another patron has not requested them. Any book will be recalled if needed by a current Agnes Scott student or faculty member or if needed for course reserves.

Can I check out a movie?
Media materials such as DVDs, CDs, videotapes, sound recordings and equipment do not circulate to alumnae/guest borrowers as they are frequently needed on short notice for classes, and because in some cases they have been purchased with restrictions on use. If you have any concerns about your borrowing privileges or have a special request, please contact the Access Services Librarian at 404-471-6337.
