Safety

The Department of Public Safety, Agnes Scott’s own police force, has officers on duty 24 hours a day.

Emergencies: (404) 471-6400 (fire, safety or medical) >> Save this number in your cell phone!
Non-emergencies: (404) 471-6355

You will see blue emergency call boxes located around campus that can be used to alert Public Safety of an emergency situation.

On-Campus Service
Public Safety offers a nighttime escort service for students. Call (404) 471-6355 if you want an officer to accompany you to your residence hall or to other campus buildings after dark. Tell them where you are and where you need to go, and an officer will meet you as quickly as possible. Even though we have our own police to assist you, it is important that you be cautious. This is especially important when going into areas that are not well lit or places where there are not likely to be many people at night.

Off-Campus Service
A Public Safety officer will also serve as an escort for fewer than three students when they arrive at the Decatur MARTA station after dark. You must call Public Safety at (404) 471-6355 when you arrive at the MARTA station, and it may take several minutes for an officer to arrive to escort you. Because their response cannot be immediate, it is recommended that students plan ahead to be picked up by another student or to travel in a group so as not to have to wait at the MARTA station alone.

Safety Tips
We want you to enjoy Atlanta and Decatur, and staying safe will help make that possible. When out and about, remember these tips:
  • Always walk with confidence. Avoid walking alone in isolated areas and at night.
  • If you sense a potential threat, take action to get away and protect yourself.
  • If you think you are being followed, cross the street, go into a store, or move to a well-lit, public area. If you feel threatened, don’t be afraid to ask for help or notify the police.
  • If someone tries to rob you, do not resist. Hand over whatever they want; don't give up your life.
  • Carry a whistle to attract attention if you feel threatened in any way.
  • Carry your purse or bag close to your body, not dangling in your arms.
  • Do not use an open bag in crowded public areas. Use one with a zipper or a flap that fastens.
  • Do not carry large sums of money. If you must, divide your money up and put it in different places in your purse, pockets, etc.
  • If possible, tell your roommate or some other person where you are going and when you will return.
  • Do not accept rides from strangers or offer rides to strangers.
  • Pay attention to cars that pull up beside you or pass you more than once. Listen for footsteps or voices. Do not wear headphones and listen to music when walking or jogging.
  • Find out about the area before you go there.
  • Know where you’re going, how to get there, and how to get back.
  • Try to avoid using ATM machines at night.
  • There is safety in numbers. Do not walk alone at night; travel with friends or in a group.
  • If in a club or bar, never take a drink if you don’t know what’s in it or who is giving it to you.
  • If something should happen off-campus, dial 911 for emergency help.
