Margaret W. Pepperdene Fund for Intellectual Engagement
Honor the Legacy; Inspire the Scholar
During her more-than-30-year tenure at Agnes Scott College, the late Professor of English Emerita Margaret W. “Jane” Pepperdene formed close friendships and associations with 20th-century literary greats—and with innumerable students.
The fruits of these literary contacts, her academic research and rigorous intellect were bestowed lavishly on these students. She never forgot a student she had taught, where that student sat in the classroom or the content of her work. Likewise, students vividly recall their professor’s flair for the dramatic and the mesmerizing effect of her body language, intensity and speech.
To honor such an inspired teaching career and to give future students an opportunity to develop a similar love of literature, the college has determined appropriate avenues through which this beloved professor’s life and career can be recognized.
The Margaret W. Pepperdene Fund for Intellectual Engagement will expand in purpose as it grows:
- A fund total of $50,000 to $199,999 will support the acquisition of books and analytical materials to deepen students' experiences and understandings of literature
- When the fund reaches $200,000 to $749,999, it will support special learning opportunities that help students explore their love of English
- When the endowment reaches $750,000, the fund will become the Margaret W. Pepperdene Writer in Residence Program to continue bringing accomplished writers to campus
- An endowment of $1.5 million will establish a permanent, named professorship
