The Anna Young Alumnae House serves as a home away from home for alumnae, trustees, and a multitude of important college visitors. The house offers convenient, affordable accommodations for guests, including interview candidates, prospective students, current and future parents, visiting artists, performers and lecturers. It extends the residential community experience to our guests, an important component in attracting prospective students and their families as well as new faculty and staff members.
The house has had no major renovations or improvements in 40 years. Guest rooms are not accessible for those in wheelchairs or with difficulty navigating stairs. Bathroom facilities are outdated and inadequate. The formal décor is out of step with today’s more casual visitors.
Funding
The renovation will be funded through gifts from alumnae and other donors. A lead gift from the estate of an alumna nine years ago, including property to be sold, constitutes nearly $1 million toward the goal. No construction will begin until all funds have been raised. Fundraising efforts will not take away from any academic or student projects and will provide alumnae a chance to give toward something to be enjoyed by alumnae as well as other members and guests of our community.
The Plans
Guestrooms
Each of the five guestrooms will have a separate bathroom. A VIP suite, located on the second floor, will include a sitting area, workspace, bedroom, bath and storage space.
The Tearoom
The current alumnae-relations work area will become a “tearoom” again to be used as an informal lounge for college guests or smaller college events. It will accommodate up to 30 people. The restored tearoom will become the gateway into the Alumnae Garden through French doors and a terrace so that events may flow between the two spaces. The terrace landscaping will blend in with the rest of the Alumnae Garden, including the fountain and Robert Frost statue.
Accessibility
The entire facility will become handicap accessible. One bedroom and bathroom, located on the first floor, will be designated for the disabled and handicapped. An elevator will be installed, enabling more people to use the house during campus visits.
History
Built in 1921, the Anna I. Young Alumnae House is the first alumnae house in the Southeast and the second in the country. It is named for Anna Young ’10, a professor of mathematics who taught at the college until her death in 1920. When authorized by the trustees in 1921, the resolution stated the “Alumnae of the College are our best asset,” and the house would be built to allow the alumnae association to “maintain an effective organization and better cooperate in the advancement of the college.”
About the Architects
Perkins+Will is the architectural firm and Marcia Knight ’73, an associate of the firm, is our project manager. Knight has worked closely with a shepherd’s committee that includes several alumnae and is staffed by Kim Vickers '87, director of alumnae relations. The landscaping will be done by Carol R. Johnson of Carol R. Johnson Associates, who designed and implemented the college’s master landscape plan.
