How to Interview a College
When you apply to a college, you are often expected to have an interview with a college representative so the representative can assess your fit with the college or university. However, your campus tour and interview are also your chance to interview the college. Talk with students and admission representatives to determine the college’s fit with your needs and aspirations. Think of yourself as the interviewer, and don’t be afraid to ask tough questions and expect honest answers.
Before the Interview—Do Your Homework
-
Become familiar with the college. Review printed materials you might have received, go to their Web site and take notes about items that strike you, positively and negatively.
-
Create an “interview kit.” Include a notepad, pens, folder with pertinent information and a list of questions you have for the college. Taking notes and safely storing valuable handouts in your folder and bag will show the interviewer that you are engaged and responsible, and you will have the information you need to make a decision afterward.
-
Prepare questions. Frequently the interviewer will ask if you have any concerns or comments. “Uh, no,” is not a good response. Asking specific questions about the college and its programs enhances your credibility and shows that you have initiative and interest.
-
Practice. After you practice interviewing, practice again. Become confident asking and answering tough questions. It makes you a more impressive candidate and will give you the information you need to make your college choice.
During the Interview—Take Charge
-
Ask specific questions about your areas of interest.
-
Ask questions that give you a sense of the college’s fit with your values and expectations. For example:
-
What are the college’s academic and social expectations for its students?
-
How would you characterize your students? What is the collective personality of the college?
-
What can I get here that I won’t find anywhere else?
-
Tell me about your alumnae. What have they done after leaving this institution?
-
Why should I choose this college?
-
Choose one or two questions that you ask everywhere you apply. Take notes and compare the answers to help you find the place that is right for you.
