American comics are changing fast. Bolstered by the literary ambitions of the "graphic novel" movement, a flood of international influences and the growing importance of new technologies, the comics landscape shifts regularly in surprising and increasingly unpredictable directions. Author and comics artist Scott McCloud—“just about the smartest guy in comics”—puts all these trends into perspective in a fast-moving visual presentation. McCloud created the light-hearted science fiction/superhero comic book series Zot in part as a reaction to the increasingly grim direction superhero comics were taking in the 1980s. He is best known as a comics theorist following the 1993 publication of Understanding Comics, a wide-ranging exploration of the definition, history, vocabulary and methods of the medium of comics, which was done in comics form. He authored Reinventing Comics, also in comic form, in which he outlined 12 “revolutions” that he argued would be keys to the growth and success of comics as a popular and creative medium. His latest work, Making Comics, explores the art and craft of telling stories visually.
