Wednesday, September 01, 2010
As a welcome to the neighborhood, new head coach Catherine Geerlings received a gift from her team that she won’t soon forget; a dramatic come-from-behind victory in her college coaching debut.
Agnes Scott defeated Rust College, 3-1 at home in their season-opener. The victory gives Agnes Scott a 1-0 record.
The Scotties fell behind early to Rust, losing the first game, 25-19. In the second game, the Scotties took an early 10-4 lead and extended the margin to nine at 21-12. Rust would close to within three with the game at 23-20, but two straight kills by Morgan Bender gave the Scotties the game two victory.
The third game remained tight for most of the way, with the Scotties trailing by 3 at 18-15. Claire Brummeler led the Agnes Scott charge, as she gained service with a kill and followed it with four service aces during an eight-point run. A kill by Joy Smith and service ace by Bender helped give the Scotties a 25-19 winning margin.
A fifth game seemed certain, as Agnes Scott trailed 24-19 in game four. Kills by Bender, Brummeler and Kirnel Daniel, along with four errors by Rust helped the Scotties tie the game at 24 and eventually take a 26-24 win and 3-1 match victory.
The Scotties will now shift their focus to preparation for this weekend. Agnes Scott will travel to North Carolina where they will compete in the Methodist Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
