On April 27, the Agnes Scott Athletic Department celebrated the annual Athletics Department Banquet in the Evans Hall Banquet Room. The event brought together distinguished members of the Agnes Scott Community, athletic staff, department sponsors, varsity student-athletes and family members.
Among the banquet highlights were coaches presenting team awards. Among the awards were senior presentations, in which framed jerseys were presented to four-year athletes. Along with a slide show that displayed action photographs of Scotties from all six varsity sports, the banquet served as the location for the announcement of major department awards; Sportswoman of the Year, Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Rookie of the Year, Friend of the Scotties and the Scottie Spirit Award .
Agnes Scott Dean of Students, Donna Lee presented the Sportswoman of the Year Award to soccer player, Caitlin Suilmann. Suilmann, a junior from Powder Springs, Ga., is a three-time GSAC All-Conference selection and two-time All-Academic performer. She holds the school records for assists in a season and a career. Suilmann is also a two-year captain and carries a 3.97 GPA as a Biology major.
Agnes Scott Dean of the College, Rosemary Zumwalt presented the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award to soccer player, Kelsey Shaul. Shaul, a junior from Kennesaw, Ga., holds a 4.0 GPA as a Math major. She is a two-year captain and has been a member of the GSAC All-Academic Team the past two years. This past season, Shaul ranked second on the soccer team in assists and fourth in scoring.
The Rookie of the Year Award was presented by Agnes Scott Dean of Admissions, LeeAnn Afton. Receiving the award was first-year, Rachel Storz. Storz has been undefeated both doubles and singles conference play. She has received GSAC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors, and was named to both the GSAC All-Conference and All-Freshman teams.
The Friend of the Scotties Award was announced by Athletics Director, Joeleen Akin. Receiving the honor this year was Dean of the College, Rosemary Zumwalt. Through her support of Scottie Athletics in the stands and on campus, Zumwalt has been a valued supporter. Zumwalt is retiring at the end of this school year.
The Scottie Spirit Award was also announced by Athletics Director, Joeleen Akin. Receiving the honor this year was Julia Storey, a member of the Agnes Scott class of ’54. Storey has been an active supporter and benefactor of Scottie Athletics for many years.
