When Agnes Scott faced Spelman on Gellerstedt Field on Sunday, both soccer teams were celebrating Senior Day. Only one team was able to celebrate a victory.
The Scotties defeated Spelman, 1-0 on Sunday, as the lone Agnes Scott senior, Erica Eiring was honored at halftime.
The decisive goal was scored by Clara Kienzle off of a Kelsey Shaul corner kick in the 36th minute.Goalie Ashley Watts recorded the shutout, her sixth of the season.
“I am proud of the players for the way they rebounded from a poor effort on Thursday night," Head Coach Joe Bergin said. "Both teams needed a result today and it showed as the game had a playoff atmosphere to it. It was a great result for our program.” On Thursday, the Scotties lost at Maryville, 7-0.
The victory over Spelman on Sunday raised the Scotties' record to 9-7-1 and 5-1 in conference. A victory over Piedmont on Wednesday would secure second place in the standings and a first-round bye in the GSAC Tournament scheduled for this weekend.
