Entering his seventh year at the helm of the Scotties’ soccer program is Joe Bergin. His seven-year tenure makes him the second longest tenured coach in the Great South Athletic Conference (GSAC). Bergin graduated with a BA in Journalism from Marietta College (Ohio) in 1986. While at Marietta, Bergin was a four-year member of the soccer team and set a number of goalkeeping records his junior and senior seasons.

Bergin spent 10 years playing professionally, mostly on the West Coast, for a variety of teams in both the indoor and outdoor professional leagues. Retiring in 2001 he turned his passion for the game to coaching. Prior to his arrival to Agnes Scott in 2002, Bergin coached at Division III Occidental College in Los Angeles for seven years.

In 2008, the Scotties finished 7-12-1 advancing to the GSAC tournament semi-final for the fifth year in a row where they fell to eventual champion Maryville College.

The Scotties have also earned four consecutive National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Team Academic Awards. In 2006, Agnes Scott had the highest GPA reported by all Georgia Colleges and Universities’ soccer programs. Agnes Scott also placed nine members on the 2008 GSAC All Academic Team.

While at Agnes Scott, Bergin has won two Great South Athletic Conference, Coach of the Year Awards (2005 & 2007) and recorded an overall record of 56-57-5.
