Entering his sixth year at the helm of the Scotties’ soccer program this year is Joe Bergin. Bergin, raised in Ohio, graduated with a BA in Journalism from Marietta College in 1986. While at Marietta, Bergin was a four-year member of the soccer team and set a number of goalkeeping records his junior and senior seasons.

Bergin spent 10 years playing professionally, mostly on the West Coast, for a variety of teams in both the indoor and outdoor professional leagues. Retiring in 2001, he turned his passion for the game to coaching. Prior to coming to Agnes Scott in 2002, Bergin coached at Division III Occidental College in Los Angeles for seven years.

In 2007 the Scotties finished 12-7-1, the second most wins in school history. Amongst the wins last season was the school’s first ever over a nationally ranked side (Rhodes #17 at the time). The 12 wins recorded gave the Scotties three consecutive years of double digit wins.

The Scotties have also earned three consecutive National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Team Academic Awards and in 2006, had the highest GPA reported by all Georgia Colleges and Universities’ soccer programs. Agnes Scott also placed six members on the 2007 Great South Athletic Conference All Academic Team.

While at Agnes, Scott Bergin has won two Great South Athletic Conference’s Coach of the Year awards (2005 & 2007) and his overall record at Agnes Scott is 49-45-4.

Bergin and his wife, Mae, reside in Decatur.
