Q & A with the Deans

What noteworthy events are planned for this fall?

JD: Our Common Reading book Einstein’s Dreams by Alan Lightman is part of a series of fall experiences and events focusing on scientific discovery. The year 2009 is the International Year of Astronomy, and our own Bradley Observatory will host a series of slide show presentations on Galileo’s contributions. The Agnes Scott theatre department will be performing Bertolt Brecht’s play Galileo, and the Dalton Gallery will host exhibitions with science-related themes.

MH: This fall we are welcoming all our students into “Living & Learning Communities,” which means you will be living on the same residence hall floor with fellow students in your First-Year Seminar. It’s a great way to begin the process of collaboration that makes an Agnes Scott education special.

What advice do you have for new students at Agnes Scott?

JD: Spend at least two hours studying outside of class for every hour spent in class, and take advantage of the many academic support resources on campus—the academic advising office, the Writing & Speaking Center and the math center.

MH: Get involved in one of the many student organizations on campus—one that speaks to your interests and talents.

What do you hope every new student will do on campus?

JD: Make the effort to get to know at least one of your professors during your first semester—visit her or his office, tell something about yourself and your academic interests, comment on some aspect of one of the books you are reading for the class. Your professor will appreciate your initiative, and you will discover a supportive and encouraging mentor. Oh, and spend time reading in the main hall of the McCain Library—one of the greatest spaces for contemplation on campus!

MH: Take time to go to some of the many lectures and cultural events scheduled throughout the year—even if you think you have too much homework. I promise you it will enrich your education.

Why is the ASC 101 program so valuable?

JD: Like an ideal travel guide, ASC 101 will enrich your academic journey, providing you with a map of important locations (such as the Wellness Center and the Office of Academic Advising), helping you take advantage of local resources (such as your academic adviser), and explaining local customs (such as e-mail etiquette).

MH: ASC 101 will also open up the wider world of Atlanta, offering excursions to such treasures as the King Center, the High Museum of Art and the urban campuses of Georgia Tech and Georgia State—all while “going green” by riding on MARTA.
