The information below will only apply if you are starting school in fall semester.
Foreign Language Placement Tests
The study of other languages is a degree requirement at Agnes Scott. If you have one or more years of study in French, German, Spanish, Latin or ancient Greek in high school and you wish to continue study of that same language at Agnes Scott, you are required to take a placement test. Transfer students with college course work in a language do not need to take the placement test.
Spanish, Latin, French and German
The Spanish, Latin and French placement test are online on our Blackboard course management system. Instructions on how to access Blackboard are mailed to you. The German placement test will take place Friday, August 22, 2009 from 2-4 p.m. in Buttrick Hall Room 201. The results of these tests will be available in time for your meeting with your adviser on the Monday preceding registration.
Ancient Greek, Chinese and Japanese
Ancient Greek, Chinese and Japanese do not currently have placement tests, students can speak directly with the instructor about placement during Orientation at the Academic Fair on Saturday, August 23, 2009.
Even if you choose to study a different language at Agnes Scott, we encourage you to take the placement test for the language you studied in high school in case you change your mind. Also, be aware that if you have one or more years of high school study, you may not elect to “start over” by registering for the introductory level of that same foreign language.
We recommend that you begin your foreign language study during your first semester at Agnes Scott. This is because students starting a new language will need four semesters to complete the requirement and students continuing foreign language study from high school should not have a time gap before continuing their study at ASC.
Calculus Readiness Survey
If you are interested in taking Math 118, Calculus I, you should visit the mathematics department Web site to take the Calculus Readiness Survey. This is not a placement test—it is used for advising purposes only. Information from the test will be made available to your adviser so that you may make an informed decision about which math course best serves your needs. The math homepage also has full descriptions about the range of introductory math courses available this year.
Music Theory Placement Test
The Music Theory placement test is required of all students considering a music major or minor and helps determine their eligibility for MUS 111 (Music Theory I). MUS 111 has a prerequisite of either MUS 108 (Fundamentals of Music Theory) or a passing score on the placement test. The placement test takes place Friday, August 22, 2009 from 2-4 p.m. in Presser Hall Room 103. The test will cover such materials as pitch (bass and treble clefs as well as octave registers), key signatures (major and minor keys), time signatures, tempo terms, scales (major and all three forms of minor), chords (triads in root position and inversions) and Roman numeral analysis. Learn more on the music department site.
Dance Technique
Students interested in enrolling in any dance technique courses at level II or above should attend an informal dance placement class on Friday, August 22, 2009 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Dance Studio.
