Global Connections Program

Global Connections is an international study-tour program led by Agnes Scott faculty during the January intercession or in late May. Prior to their travel, students begin their country-specific studies at Agnes Scott with one base course as well as orientation sessions. Students then spend two to three weeks studying in the cultural context of the country with opportunities to participate in research, journal writing, creative projects and group sessions.

Travel destinations have included Benin, Cuba, Czech Republic, England, France, Gambia, Greece, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Poland, Spain and Switzerland.

Requirements

  • Attendance at all pre-departure orientation sessions
  • Completed assignments associated with the program
  • Students must be concurrently enrolled in the base course or have satisfactorily completed the base course during the past two academic years
Global Connections: Chile                               
May 10 - May 29, 2009
This travel seminar to Chile will focus on redemocratization, globalization, and human rights.  Worth two hours of credit, this Global Connections study/travel component complements Political Science 320: Latin American Politics
 
Global Connections: Mexico                              
May 11 - May 27, 2009
The travel seminar will visit several different archeological zones, as well as contemporary communities, and will make observations to explore the astronomical significance of the locations and structures.  Students will explore:
  • the aspects of Mesoamerican civilizationsthat emphasized astronomy,
  • the importance placed on the planet Venus,
  • how astronomical observations were employed to keep accurate calendars,
  • the role of women in modern Mexican astronomy,
  • the contemporary meanings of celestial events and contemporary communities in Mexico.

Worth two hours of credit, this Gloabl Connections study/travel component complements Anthropology 101: Cultural Anthropology, Anthropology 304: People of Mesoamerica, and Astronomy 120: The Solar System.

 
The 2009-2010 academic year destinations will be to Benin, Ireland, and Italy.
