Global Connections Program

Global Connections is an international study-tour program led by Agnes Scott faculty during the January intercession or in late May. Prior to their travel, students begin their country-specific studies at Agnes Scott with one base course as well as orientation sessions. Students then spend two to three weeks studying in the cultural context of the country with opportunities to participate in research, journal writing, creative projects and group sessions.

Travel destinations have included Benin, Cuba, Czech Republic, England, France, Gambia, Greece, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jordan, Poland, Spain and Switzerland.

Requirements

  • Attendance at all pre-departure orientation sessions
  • Completed assignments associated with the program
  • Students must be concurrently enrolled in the base course or have satisfactorily completed the base course during the past two academic years
Global Connections: "Literary Ireland"
December 26, 2009 - January 11, 2010
The faculty will lead a group of students on a travel seminar to the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland visiting literary landscapes and may of the island's most beautiful and distinctive sites. Worth two hours of credit, this Global Connections study/travel component complements English 215: The Literature of Ireland; English 230: Introduction to Film Studies; and First Year Seminar 190-J: Women in the Doorway: Female Voices in Modern Irish Literature.  
 
Global Connections: Benin
May 10 - May 31, 2010
This course will offer students an intimate experience wth a West African country, its people, and culture.  Students will learn aout the Republic of Benin's geography, ethnic groups, economy, and history. Students will also study religion, marriage, and the arts in Benin.  Course materials include basic instruction of Fon, one of Benin's indigenous languages.  During the travel component, students will visit the cities of Cotonou, Ouidah, Porto-Novo, and Abomey.  In-country learning will involve lectures by local specialists, visits to museums and religious and historical sites, and attendance of ceremonies and perfomances. 
 
Worth two hours of credit, this Gloabl Connections study/travel component complements Africana Studies 380: Culture/ Ethnography of Africa; StudiesHistory (Africana Studies) 250: African Societies from 1500 to the Partition; History (African Studies) 251: African Societies from the Colonial Era to the Present; History (Africana Studies) 257: Introduction to African History; Religious Studies (Africana Studies) 140: Religions of Africa; Anthropology (Africana Studies/ Religious Studies) 219: TransAtlantic Voodoo; and Africana Studies (Music) 229: African Music: Traditional and Contemporary.
