Global Awareness Program

Global Awareness is an introductory-level, study abroad program led by ASC faculty. Students will discover a non-Western European culture in both an academic and first-hand context—building an appreciation for the world’s diversity and a better understanding of our own cultural values. This multi-disciplinary international seminar consists of a four-credit  hour on-campus course; followed by an opportunity to experience a different culture.  This year’s program features study abroad in Costa Rica.

Costa Rica - May 2008
Students will have an opportunity to explore a unique region of the world, historically, politically, and culturally. Students will observe and participate in many facets of the local culture.  Costa Rica, known as the Switzerland of Latin America, has no army and has been the only longstanding democracy in the modern history of Central America. The country’s political stability, economic development, and its ecological wonders have helped it outshine its neighbors in the region.

This year’s program begins in spring semester 2008 with students taking the “Global Awareness Concepts: Costa Rica" (GA 200) and “Global Awareness Experience: Costa Rica” (GA 201) courses. The semester-long courses are followed by a two-week, in country experience starting mid-May 2008.

During the two-week stay in Costa Rica, students will have first-hand contact with its people through a home-stay experience, personal dealings with locals during leisure activities, and while engaging in a possible volunteer opportunity. With visits to key sites in the capital and its surrounding cities, students will be able to appreciate important Costa-Rican institutions and the vitality of the country’s agrarian infrastructure. After a few days in San José, the group will travel to the interior of the country to have a better chance to experience the juxtaposition of third-world conditions and natural wonders, such as volcanoes, rainforests, rivers, and an incredible diversity of flora and fauna.
