Agnes Scott is committed to sharing its resources—facilities, equipment, and faculty—with middle-school teachers and school districts in order to improve science education for all students in metropolitan Atlanta.

Explore the Science of Food, June 2-6, 2008
Join Agnes Scott this summer to explore the science of food. During this teacher workshop, you will:

  • Learn how food helps living organisms thrive in their environment
  • Explore the impact of the environment on food production
  • Conduct experiments to explain the role of yeast in bread
  • Investigate the science behind cooking with eggs, sugar, milk, and oil
  • Demonstrate the properties of many kinds of nuts

Apply Now: "The Science of Food" Registration Application (PDF 21 KB)

Registration Deadline: May 1, 2008 or until the workshop is full

Registration Fee:
$50 (includes breaks, lunch, and all materials)

Stipends
A grant from the Georgia Teacher Quality Program will allow us to provide $300 stipends to up to 24 teachers. Preference will be given to a team of three teachers from a single school, each representing one of the three middle grades. Teacher teams interested in being considered for stipends should submit their registration forms together. Each teacher should submit his or her registration fee at that time. If a team is selected to receive a stipend, the registration fee will be treated as a deposit and will be returned at the conclusion of the workshop.

About Agnes Scott's Teacher Workshops
Agnes Scott's workshops focus on the Georgia Performance Standards for grades 6-8. Some workshops are designed to address standards across grade levels and the college also works with schools and school districts to plan and implement workshops for specific grade levels. Our workshops can help you:

  • Explore new ways to help your students master the Georgia Performance Standards in earth, life and physical science
  • Develop new tools to assess student understanding of the characteristics of science
  • Take home materials and lesson plans you can use in your own classes
  • Use state-of-the-art technology and science instrumentation at Agnes Scott
