The Science Center for Women coordinates programs that support students and faculty in the sciences. Throughout our history, Agnes Scott students have taken more advanced science and math courses than women in coed institutions. Our faculty has featured proportionately more women scientists—role models for our ambitious students—and our graduates include extraordinary scientists, physicians and technologists.
Today, more than one third of our students come to us intending to major in the sciences. They want to work on environmental issues, study the human genome, cure AIDS, design software and explore space. Agnes Scott women believe they have a leadership role to play in health care, in agriculture, in technology, in the medical ethics issues of this century—and they are eager to get started.
The Science Center for Women currently supports the following programs and activities:
Faculty-Student Collaborative Research
Faculty in the sciences can apply for funds to support summer or academic year research with an undergraduate student. Other faculty members have research funding from external agencies, including the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health. Students interested in this opportunity should contact a faculty member whose research appeals to them.

Public Health Education
Agnes Scott College and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) signed an agreement in October 2005 that provides a framework for coordination and collaborative efforts to enhance public health education of undergraduate students. Activities supported under the agreement include student internships at the CDC, academic-year student-faculty research related to the CDC's research agenda, and development of new courses and course materials on public health.

Outreach to K-12 Science Teachers and Students
Agnes Scott College operates a summer science day camp for girls entering grades 6, 7 and 8. The camp theme for summer 2008 is "The Science of Food." Workshops for science teachers focus on content aligned with the Georgia performance standards for middle school science.
