Theatre

Would you like to read the classical Greek plays that led to today’s theatre? Watch scenes from the latest Broadway musicals? Create scenic, lighting and costume designs … and get the chance to execute them? Write that play that has always been a dream? Work with professional theatre artists?

Consider a major or minor in theatre at Agnes Scott. Theatre is a performing art that places human experience before an audience in the present moment. Theatre holds a mirror up to nature, allowing us to see ourselves and our place in the universe in a manner that is at once immediate and timeless. As a theatre student you will develop artistic, analytical, critical and organizational capabilities as you work to realize your full creative potential.

What will I study?
The theatre curriculum integrates theory, history and practice, including foundational training in acting, directing, dramatic writing and design. Theatre students are actively involved in the departmental production program.

Whatever aspect of theatre captures your interest, Agnes Scott’s theatre program will provide challenging courses and hands-on experience. Want to become an actor? Try Acting I or Acting II. Interested in playwriting or screenwriting? Try a course in Dramatic Writing or Topics in Creative Writing. How about directing? Direct your play in Directing II. Interested in design? Try Design for the Stage I and II and learn the principles of costume, scenic and lighting design.

Why should I study theatre at Agnes Scott?

  • Campus Involvement
Agnes Scott’s student theatre troupe, Blackfriars, works closely with the theatre department to create a student-centered production program encouraging and promoting individual leadership and responsibility. Founded in 1915, Blackfriars is the oldest continuously performing theatre group in Atlanta. Productions have included Antigone, The Tempest, The Fantasticks, The Learned Ladies, Just So Stories and The Emperor’s New Clothes.
  • The Winter Theatre
Agnes Scott’s Winter Theatre is home to both the theatre department and Blackfriars. The 310-seat auditorium with a semi-thrust stage provides an intimate viewing experience for guests and incredible resources for students.
  • The City of Atlanta
Atlanta provides many opportunities for students to experience first-rate shows and performances. Employment and internship opportunities are available at many of the city’s theatre organizations, including the Alliance Theatre Company, Dad’s Garage, Georgia Shakespeare, Push Push Theatre, Synchronicity Performance Group and Théâtre du Rêve.
  • Audition and Internship Opportunities
Theatre professors are active with local, regional and national organizations. Students have worked with the Atlanta Coalition of Performing Arts and the Nashville Children’s Theatre, presented workshops at the Georgia Theatre Conference, assisted with festival organization at the Southeastern Theatre Conference and participated in scholarship auditions with the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.
  • Study Abroad Opportunities
Agnes Scott’s most popular study-abroad program involves travel to London where students have access to outstanding training programs as well as the restored Globe Theatre and the famous West End. Other trips have involved study in Paris to witness French theatre festivals and residence in Beijing to observe Chinese performance techniques. Students also find programs in the United States in theatre capitals such as New York and Washington, D.C.
