History
Would you like to learn about past centuries through romantic love letters, songs from the American Revolution and inspiring slave narratives? Would you like to discover contemporary history by meeting a Holocaust survivor, visiting a West African grocery store, watching Chinese cinema and exploring your own heritage?
Consider a major or minor in history at Agnes Scott. Learn about other times and places, on the basis of the documents, objects, pictures and sounds that generations have left behind. You’ll engage in a variety of approaches to the past and explore different methods of historical practice. As you investigate and analyze history, you’ll strengthen your skills as a reader, writer, critical thinker and speaker.
Learn through Lively Classroom Discussions
As a history student, you’ll enjoy a lively and friendly class atmosphere made possible by our low student to faculty ratio. Students’ voices are part of every class. And while you gain an understanding of the peoples of different regions and different eras in history, you’ll find a respect for their differences and a new perspective to assess the events of the present and the world’s prospects for the future. Students in our courses do not memorize dates.
Gain a Global Perspective
History faculty regularly lead our students on study abroad trips. ASC students in Ghana discussed the slave trade from within the slave quarters of a fort. ASC students in France and Switzerland revisited the works of Voltaire and Rousseau in the houses where these thinkers wrote. ASC students in Germany and Poland recalled the meaning of the Holocaust while visiting concentration camps, memorials and ghetto sites. A 2009 trip took students to China, where they discussed ancient Chinese history at the Terra Cotta Warriors Museum.

Get Involved and Become a Leader
History majors enjoy participation in student-run clubs and organizations on campus, and often hold leadership positions. Each fall, the college’s chapter of the national history honor society, Phi Alpha Theta, initiates new members; and each May, the department honors its graduating seniors at a party.
