M.A.T. Mathematics

Opening Young Minds to the Language of Science and Technology
Mathematics is widely viewed as the most important component of K-12 education, after reading and writing, in promoting future success in college and subsequent careers.  So teaching mathematics well has a profound impact on the lives of high school students, and the directions that their futures will take.

Our master of arts in teaching secondary mathematics program is designed to give its graduates a deep understanding of the mathematics they will teach, the skills to solve mathematical problems with confidence, and an understanding and appreciation of the role mathematics plays in the sciences, engineering and other professions.  This curriculum features a combination of mathematics and education courses plus elective courses in relevant areas.  Field experience includes teaching seminars, classroom observation and a 12-week supervised teaching assignment.  Candidates enjoy smaller classes with more personalized attention from our professors.

The M.A.T. secondary mathematics program is open to men and women with an undergraduate major or concentrated study in mathematics (including applied mathematics and mathematical sciences) but who have not completed teacher certification.  Graduates receive certification in grades 6-12 from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission, reciprocal with many other states.

Individuals with undergraduate degrees in related fields such as computer science or engineering which include significant mathematics course work, may be able to easily fill gaps in their mathematics background.  To explore this option, request more information.
