Teaching and Scholarly Interests:

Juan Chattah teaches music theory and music and cinema. He is an active performer and composer whose work has been featured on "Stories in the Air,” a nationally syndicated program on Public Radio International. In 2007 he was a semi-finalist in the Young Film Composers Competition, which was sponsored by Turner Classic Movies. Recent music includes “Music for Signs,” which he performed at the 2008 William A. Calder Fall Equinox Concert at Agnes Scott College.
 
Juan’s research interests include the application of models drawn from linguistics and critical theory to the analysis of film music. His dissertation “Semiotics, Pragmatics, and Metaphor in Film Music Analysis” is under review for publication. He regularly presents papers on film music analysis; recent conference papers were presented at the College Music Society (Salt Lake City 2007), Sound, Music and the Moving Image (London 2007), Electroacoustic Music Society (Leicester 2007), The Semiotic Society of America (New Orleans 2007), The Symposium of Research in Music Theory (Indiana 2006) and Music Theory Southeast (Miami 2005).
