Folklore, specifically ritual and symbolic behavior; history and theory of anthropology; gendered images

Professional Activities:
Dean Zumwalt was recently honored by the American Philosophical Society with the Frederick Lewis Award for her book Franz Boas and W. E. B. Du Bois at Atlanta University, 1906 (2008). She also received the Elli Kongas Maranda Book Prize from the American Folklore Society for Ritual Medical Lore of Sephardic Women: Sweetening the Spirits and Healing the Sick, coauthored with Issac Jack Lévy (University of Illinois Press, 2002). She is also the author of American Folklore Fellowship: A Dialogue of Dissent (1988); The Enigma of Arnold van Gennep (1873-1957): Master of French Folklore and Hermit of Bourg-la-Reine (1988); and Wealth and Rebellion: Elsie Clews Parsons, Anthropologist and Folklorist (1992). Her articles have appeared in American Anthropologist, International Folklore Review, Jewish Folklore and Ethnology Review, Journal of American Folklore, Proverbium, and Western Folklore.

Dean Zumwalt is a John Simon Guggenheim Fellow (1996-1997) and a Mellon Resident Research Fellow (1996).
